What Is Flexible Dieting?

Perhaps you have heard of the word? Is it a myth? Is it possible to eat anything an everything you want while having the body you desire?

Flexible dieting, macros and IIfym hold the theory that as long as you hit your macros (protein, carbs and fats) you can in fact eat anything you like. Now macros are found in everything. Oreos have macros. For example 3 Oreos have 7 grams of fat, 25 grams of carbs and 2 grams of protein. Some believe that you could loose weight as long as you are eating your allotted daily macros. Is this true?

I will use myself for an example. My macros that I aim for on my normal days are currently 130 grams protein, 130 grams carbohydrate and 40 grams of fat. To keep this article brief I will not get into high and normal days or where I got those numbers from.

As I stated, with the above macros could I technically eat Oreos everyday? Absolutely! Do I want to? No! I choose not to eat processed sugar or high caloric/dense foods on a daily basis for the following reasons.

#1. Let’s be honest how hard is it to stick to just 3 Oreos? Again I am just using Oreos as an example but since it is a processed food it contains sugar, “natural flavors” and a bunch of other ingredients I can not even pronounce. These artificial ingredients leave you unsatisfied and always craving more. So yes, I can fit cookies into my every day diet. Normally I choose not to which brings me to reason….

#2. I know 130 grams of carbohydrate sounds like a lot but when you are exercising and your metabolism is running efficiently 130 grams goes quick! I choose not to eat processed foods or lets call them “dense” foods because I prefer to have volume. Whole grain breads, oatmeal and grains keeps me full. Without mid-day sugar dips, exhaustion and mood swings.

#3. Since I eat mostly fresh foods my taste buds have changed. Processed foods taste like air to me. Although I still love a good cheesecake or chocolate chip cookie I prefer homemade. Yes it is still a dessert but after a bite or 2 I am content and not looking for more.

#4. I notice a difference in my composition when eating the following foods such as pizza, cookies, chips, alcohol REGULARLY. Let me be clear about this. This is different for everyone! I have noticed for men that food quality can vary a little more than for women. I know, so not fair! The same holds true for someone who need to loose 50lbs versus 5. All women who come to me want to loose body fat, have toned sleek arms and cellulite free legs. However for someone who needs to loose 50+ lbs the wiggle room is different than for those who have 5lbs to go. Since the body naturally wants to hold on to fat the closer you become to minimal body fat the hard it is to take off. Hence why someone who wants to loose weight solely for ascetic reasons would need to be more particular about what they are putting into their mouths.

This is a very brief article on a topic that has many variables. However, I will say that as a whole I have found flexible dieting to work best for me. It give me the ability to pick and choose what I like to eat without someone telling me what I have to eat. I like that I have control and choice every day! I hope you find this article helpful. As always feel free to message me with any questions or comments.

Sending lots of love and happy eating,
